UV Lights in Your AC: Worth It in Houston, or Just Another Upsell?

Somewhere between the free coil inspection and the invoice, a tech has probably offered you a UV light. "Kills mold and bacteria. Hospital technology. Only $800."

Half of that pitch is true. Let's separate the physics from the sales script.

What a UV light actually does

A germicidal UV-C lamp mounted inside your air handler shines continuously on the evaporator coil — the cold, wet aluminum radiator your air passes over. UV-C light at that range damages the DNA of mold spores, bacteria, and biofilm trying to colonize the coil surface.

That's the whole trick. And on the coil, it genuinely works.

Why this matters more in Houston than almost anywhere

Your coil is cold and wet by design. In Houston, the air hitting it is warm and near-saturated for most of the year. Cold + wet + organic dust = the best mold habitat in your entire house. It's why so many "musty AC smell" calls we run trace straight to the coil — the pattern we described in mold vs. mildew in AC vents.

A properly placed UV lamp keeps that surface hostile to growth 24/7. In our climate, that's a real benefit, not a gimmick.

What a UV light will NOT do

This is where the sales pitch usually leaves the rails:

  • It won't clean dirty ducts. UV only treats what the light touches — the coil and drain pan. Dust, dander, and debris lining 200 feet of ductwork are untouched. UV is not a substitute for actual duct cleaning.
  • It won't purify room air. Air flies past the lamp in a fraction of a second — too fast for meaningful in-air kill. The benefit is surface treatment, not air sterilization.
  • It won't fix a moisture problem. Standing water from a clogged condensate drain will out-breed any lamp.

When it's worth the money

Good candidates:

  1. Homes that have already had coil mold cleaned once — UV keeps it from coming back
  2. Allergy and asthma households stacking every advantage
  3. Homes near water or with chronic humidity issues

Skip it if your ducts have never been cleaned — you'd be installing a nightlight in a dirty system. Clean first, then protect.

What it should cost

In Houston, a quality single-lamp installation typically runs $300–$600 installed, and lamps need replacement every 1–2 years (~$60–$150). Quotes far above that range are paying for someone's commission.

The honest sequence

Duct cleaning removes the buildup. Coil cleaning removes the habitat. UV keeps the habitat hostile. In that order — anyone selling you step three before step one has it backwards.

Want a straight answer on whether your system would benefit? Ask us during your cleaning — if your coil doesn't need it, we'll say so.
