Is Your AC Working Too Hard? How Clogged Ducts Kill Efficiency

Walk over to your return vent (the big one where you change the filter). Listen.

Does it sound like a jet engine taking off? Do you hear a high-pitched whistle? Does your AC unit outside sound like it’s grinding?

That is the sound of your air conditioner dying a slow death.

In Houston, we ask a lot of our AC units. They run 10 months out of the year. But when you force them to pull air through clogged, dirty ducts, you are driving them into an early grave.

The Science: Static Pressure

I won't bore you with too much technical jargon, but you need to understand Static Pressure.

Think of it like blood pressure for your house.

  • Clean Ducts: Low pressure. Air flows easily. The blower motor spins effortlessly.
  • Dirty Ducts: High pressure. The blower motor has to fight against the resistance of dust, hair, and debris.

When static pressure gets too high, two things happen:

  1. Blower Motor Burnout: The motor overheats and fails. That’s a $400 - $800 repair.
  2. Compressor Failure: If the system can’t move enough air across the coils, the refrigerant pressure spikes. This kills your compressor. That is a $2,000+ repair (or a whole new unit).

Signs Your Ducts are Clogged

How do you know if flow is the problem?

  • Hot & Cold Spots: The master bedroom is freezing, but the kids' room is 80 degrees. Air isn't reaching the far vents.
  • Weak Airflow: Put your hand up to a vent. Does it feel like a gentle breeze instead of a strong stream?
  • Constant Running: The unit never cycles off, even at night.
  • Dust around Vents: You see gray fuzzy "ghost marks" on the ceiling or wall around your registers.

Save Your System (and Your Wallet)

I’ve been in this business in Houston for 15 years. I’ve seen 5-year-old Trane and Carrier units—top of the line systems—trashed because the homeowners never cleaned the ducts.

Replacing an HVAC system costs $10,000 to $15,000 these days. Cleaning your ducts costs a fraction of that.

It is basic maintenance, just like changing the oil in your truck.

Don't Wait for the Crash

If your system is struggling, don't wait for it to freeze up in July.

Let us inspect your ductwork. We use cameras to show you exactly what is going on inside. If it’s clean, we’ll tell you. If it’s clogged, we’ll fix it.

Save your AC.
